In a new study, researchers found that ketone supplementation may help decrease body fat and body weight.
The finding may help develop an alternative to low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic diets to help people lose and keep off weight.
The research was conducted by a team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Previous research has shown that high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic diets could decrease body weight more rapidly than low-calorie diets.
This is because the ketogenic diet makes the body burn fat rather than carbohydrates, and it can bring many health benefits such as weight loss.
However, it is very hard to stick with a keto diet in the long run.
In the current study, the team found that using a ketone supplementation to replace 30% of daily caloric intake could lead to greater weight loss in mice.
They suggest that the ketone supplementation may increase calories expended or decrease calories available for storage.
The new finding may help develop a new diet easier to stick with for people who need to lose body fat and weight.
Instead of following a strict keto diet, people can replace part of their calorie intake with keto supplements and still lose body weight effectively.
The lead author of the study is Eric P. Plaisance, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the UAB.
The study is published in The Federation of the American Societies of Experimental Biology Journal.
