This oil may help your muscles stay strong as you age

As people get older, it is very common to feel weaker than before. Muscles slowly lose their strength and size over time.

This natural process is often called muscle aging. It can make simple daily tasks, such as walking, climbing stairs, or carrying shopping bags, more difficult. For many older adults, this change can affect their independence and quality of life.

Because of this, scientists are always trying to find safe and simple ways to help people stay strong as they age. A recent study from the University of Glasgow offers an interesting idea. It suggests that krill oil, a common dietary supplement, may help improve muscle strength and function in older adults.

The study was led by Dr. Stuart Gray and published in the journal Clinical Nutrition. The research focused on healthy adults aged 65 and older. The goal was to see whether taking krill oil every day could help support muscle health over time.

Krill oil comes from very small sea animals called krill. These tiny creatures live in cold ocean waters and are an important part of the marine food chain. Krill oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA. These nutrients are known to be important for the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids have already been linked to better muscle health in earlier research. They may help the body build muscle and maintain strength. Krill oil also contains a nutrient called choline, which may support how muscles work and use energy.

In this study, researchers worked with 102 healthy older adults. The participants were divided into two groups. One group took four grams of krill oil every day for six months. The other group took a placebo, which looked the same but did not contain active ingredients.

After six months, the researchers compared the results. They measured muscle strength, muscle size, and certain markers in the blood. The differences between the two groups were clear.

People who took krill oil became stronger. Their thigh muscle strength increased by about 9.3 percent, and their grip strength improved by 10.9 percent. Grip strength is often used as a simple way to measure overall muscle health, so this improvement is meaningful.

The researchers also found that muscle size increased slightly. The thickness of the thigh muscles grew by about 3.5 percent in the krill oil group. This suggests that the supplement may help slow down muscle loss or even partly reverse it.

Blood tests showed strong changes as well. Levels of omega-3 fatty acids increased a lot in the group taking krill oil. EPA levels more than doubled, DHA levels also increased, and the overall omega-3 index rose significantly. This shows that the body was absorbing the nutrients and using them.

Another important finding was related to how muscles respond to nerve signals. The researchers measured something called the M-wave, which shows how well muscles react when the brain sends signals to move. This measure improved by 17 percent in people who took krill oil, suggesting better communication between nerves and muscles.

Scientists believe these effects come from the nutrients in krill oil. EPA and DHA may help the body produce more muscle protein, which is needed to build and maintain muscle. They may also reduce inflammation, which can weaken muscles over time. Choline may help muscles use energy more effectively during movement.

These findings are important because they suggest a simple way to support muscle health during aging. Staying strong can help older adults remain active, reduce the risk of falls, and enjoy a better quality of life.

However, the researchers also point out that more studies are needed. This study only looked at healthy older adults, so it is not yet clear if the same benefits would apply to people with serious muscle loss or other health conditions. Long-term effects also need further research.
