Just a few minutes of hard exercise a day could prevent 8 diseases

Those who did the most intense activity had a much lower risk of developing dementia and diabetes, as well as a lower chance of dying during the study period.

One surprising result was that the benefits did not require long exercise sessions. Even a few minutes of intense activity each day added up to meaningful health improvements. This means that everyday actions, such as hurrying to catch public transport or walking briskly, can contribute to better health.

The study also found that different diseases respond differently to activity. For inflammatory diseases like arthritis, how hard people exercised mattered more than how long. For other conditions, both intensity and duration were important.

Scientists believe that vigorous activity triggers stronger changes in the body than moderate activity. It improves heart function, strengthens blood vessels, and helps the body use oxygen more effectively. It may also reduce inflammation and support brain health, which could explain the lower risk of dementia.

These findings are important because they suggest that people do not need to completely change their lifestyle to gain health benefits. Small adjustments to daily routines can have a big impact over time.

However, the researchers also caution that not everyone should suddenly increase activity intensity. People with health problems should seek medical advice before making changes. For many individuals, starting slowly and building up is the safest approach.
