
Protecting brain health has become one of the biggest challenges of modern medicine because people are living longer than ever before.
Dementia gradually damages memory, thinking, and independence, making everyday activities difficult.
Scientists know that age is the biggest risk factor, but they also believe that lifestyle choices may influence how quickly the brain ages.
A new study from Rutgers University has explored whether changing meal timing could help.
Instead of asking people to eat less food alone, researchers tested whether eating all meals within a shorter period each day might improve brain function.
The findings were presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.
The study recruited 47 women aged 50 to 79 who were living with overweight or obesity. Everyone followed a calorie-reduced diet designed to help them lose weight.
One group was also asked to eat only during an eight- to nine-hour period each day, while the other group continued eating across a more typical twelve-hour period.
Time-restricted eating has become increasingly popular because some studies suggest it may improve blood sugar, metabolism, and body weight. Researchers wondered whether these changes could also benefit the brain.
Since poor metabolic health has been linked with dementia, improving the body’s overall health might also help protect memory.
After six months, women in both groups had lost a similar amount of weight, averaging about 6.8 kilograms. This meant that any difference in thinking ability was less likely to be explained simply by weight loss. Instead, the timing of meals may have played a role.
The women who limited their eating window showed better performance in tests of planning, organisation, and solving problems. They also showed signs of improved learning and memory by making fewer mistakes during cognitive testing. However, the researchers did not find meaningful differences in multitasking ability or reaction speed.
The scientists believe several biological processes could explain these improvements. Eating earlier and avoiding food late at night may work better with the body’s natural daily rhythm. It may also improve the way cells respond to nutrients, reduce chronic inflammation, and support healthier metabolism, all of which have been linked with brain health.
Even so, the researchers caution that the study is only an early step. The participants were all older women, the trial was relatively short, and the number of volunteers was small. Larger studies involving men, younger adults, and different ethnic groups will be needed before doctors can make firm recommendations.
From a practical point of view, the findings suggest that healthy meal timing may become another useful lifestyle habit alongside regular physical activity, nutritious food, good sleep, and controlling blood pressure and diabetes. People should not make major dietary changes without discussing them with a healthcare professional, particularly if they have medical conditions or take medicines that affect blood sugar.
In conclusion, this pilot trial provides promising but preliminary evidence that shortening the daily eating window may slightly improve certain aspects of memory and thinking beyond the benefits of weight loss alone.
The results are scientifically interesting because they point to a possible new way to support healthy brain ageing, but they are not strong enough to show that time-restricted eating prevents dementia.
Larger, carefully designed clinical trials will be essential to determine whether these early improvements lead to meaningful protection against cognitive decline in the long term.
