Vitamin B3 supplement may help people walk longer without pain

Peripheral artery disease, often called PAD, is a common health problem that affects millions of people around the world. It happens when blood flow to the legs becomes reduced. This is usually caused by fatty deposits building up inside the arteries, which makes it harder for blood to move freely.

The legs need a good supply of blood to work properly, especially during activities like walking. When blood flow is limited, the leg muscles do not get enough oxygen. As a result, many people with PAD feel pain, cramping, or tiredness in their legs when they walk. Sometimes, even short distances can feel difficult.

PAD is especially common in older adults. In the United States, more than 8.5 million people over the age of 40 are affected. The condition can make daily life harder and reduce independence. Many people with PAD avoid walking because of the pain, but this can actually make the problem worse over time.

Doctors often recommend supervised exercise programs to help improve blood flow. These programs usually involve guided walking sessions that slowly build strength and endurance. However, not everyone has access to these programs. Some people may live too far away, while others may find it difficult to attend regularly.

Because of this, researchers have been looking for new ways to help people manage PAD. A recent study from scientists at Northwestern University and the University of Florida offers a promising new option.

The researchers studied a supplement called nicotinamide riboside. This is a form of vitamin B3 that has become popular in recent years, especially in products that claim to support healthy aging. In fact, by 2022, sales of this supplement in the United States had reached about 60 million dollars.

In the study, 90 people with PAD took part. Most of them were around 71 years old. The participants were divided into two groups. One group took nicotinamide riboside every day, while the other group took a placebo, which is a pill with no active ingredients.

Neither the participants nor the researchers knew who was taking which pill. This type of study design is called a double-blind trial and helps ensure the results are reliable.

The study lasted for six months. At the end, the researchers measured how far the participants could walk. The results showed that those who took the supplement were able to walk farther than those who took the placebo.

On average, the supplement group walked about 57 feet farther. In a standard six-minute walking test, they improved their distance by about 23 feet. In contrast, the placebo group actually walked 34 feet less than before. Even more encouraging, participants who took most of their pills as directed were able to increase their walking distance by more than 100 feet.

Scientists believe the supplement works by increasing levels of a substance in the body called NAD. This substance plays an important role in producing energy and repairing cells. People with PAD often have lower energy levels in their leg muscles. By increasing NAD, the supplement may help the muscles work better and reduce fatigue.

The researchers also tested whether combining nicotinamide riboside with another compound called resveratrol would provide extra benefits. Resveratrol is found in foods like red grapes and red wine and is often linked to health benefits. However, in this study, adding resveratrol did not improve the results.

The study was led by researchers including Professor Christiaan Leeuwenburgh from the University of Florida and Dr. Mary McDermott from Northwestern University. The findings were published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, showing that the research has been carefully reviewed by experts in the field.

While the results are promising, the researchers say that larger studies are still needed. They want to confirm that the supplement is both effective and safe over a longer period of time. They are also interested in studying whether it could help healthy older adults stay active as they age.

This research offers hope for people living with PAD. It suggests that a simple supplement might help improve walking ability and quality of life. Although more research is needed, it shows that new solutions may be on the way.

For now, people with PAD should continue to follow medical advice and talk to their doctor before starting any new supplement. But in the future, treatments like this may provide an easier way to stay active and reduce pain.
