A new study has found that postmenopausal women who use both tirzepatide and menopause hormone therapy at the same time lose more weight than those who use tirzepatide alone.

The study was presented at ENDO 2025, the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco.

Dr. Regina Castaneda, a research fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, said this is the first study to show that combining these two treatments can make weight loss more effective for women after menopause.

Similar results were seen in earlier studies using another weight-loss drug called semaglutide, which suggests this could be a broader trend with obesity medications and hormone therapy.

Many women gain weight after menopause due to changes in hormones. These changes often cause more belly fat, less muscle, and slower metabolism. This can raise the risk of heart disease and other serious health problems.

To test whether hormone therapy helps tirzepatide work better, researchers looked at medical records from 120 postmenopausal women over about 18 months. They compared two groups: 40 women who used both tirzepatide and hormone therapy, and 80 women who used tirzepatide alone.

The results showed that women who took both treatments lost more weight overall. On average, women using both treatments lost 17% of their body weight, while those using only tirzepatide lost 14%. Also, 45% of women on both treatments lost at least 20% of their body weight, compared to only 18% of women who used tirzepatide alone.

Dr. Maria Daniela Hurtado Andrade, also from the Mayo Clinic, said this study helps doctors understand how to create better and more personalized weight-loss plans for women after menopause. It also shows how important it is to make these treatments easier to get for the women who need them.

In short, this research offers hope for postmenopausal women struggling with weight gain. Combining hormone therapy with new obesity drugs like tirzepatide may lead to better health and improved quality of life.
