The Importance of New Guidelines

Heart failure affects millions of people worldwide, and medical experts are always looking for ways to treat it more effectively.

When you have heart failure, your heart can’t pump blood around your body as it should. This can happen if your heart becomes too weak or stiff.

New guidelines have just been released that tell doctors how to best treat people with different types of heart failure.

What’s New in Treatment Options

In 2021, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) offered guidelines about how to treat both sudden and long-term heart failure.

Since then, new research has come out that changes how doctors should manage the condition. Here’s what’s new:

For Long-Term Heart Failure

Before, there was no clear advice on using a type of medication called SGLT2 inhibitors for certain kinds of heart failure. However, new studies have shown that these medications can really help.

They can lower the chances of needing to go to the hospital because of heart failure and can also reduce the risk of dying from heart issues.

For Sudden Heart Failure

If someone is in the hospital due to sudden heart failure, the new guidelines recommend starting medication as soon as possible. This is even before the patient leaves the hospital.

Then, doctors should closely monitor the medication amounts in the weeks right after the hospital stay. This approach can lessen the chances of having to go back to the hospital and can even save lives.

For Ongoing Care

When you have regular check-ups for heart failure, the doctors look at several things to see how you’re doing.

These include symptoms like swelling, your blood pressure, heart rate, and some blood tests. Keeping an eye on these can help adjust your treatment as needed.

Extra Advice for People with Other Health Problems

The guidelines also have new recommendations for people who have heart failure along with other conditions like chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.

Just like with heart failure, SGLT2 inhibitors can lower the risks of hospital stays and death. There’s also a new medication called finerenone that can help these patients.

For people with iron deficiency, the guidelines now suggest getting iron through an IV. This can make you feel better and lower your chances of being hospitalized for heart failure.

Why It Matters

These new guidelines are a big deal because they use the latest research to give doctors the best advice on treating heart failure.

This can improve your quality of life and even extend it. If you or someone you know is dealing with heart failure, these updated guidelines could make all the difference.
