A natural fruit compound may lower blood pressure, study shows

High blood pressure is one of the most common health problems around the world. It is often called a “silent” condition because many people do not notice symptoms until serious damage has already been done.

Over time, high blood pressure can strain the heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Because of this, finding safe and effective ways to control blood pressure is very important.

A new study from researchers at the Hospital of Southern Medical University has explored a natural compound that may help. This compound is called quercetin.

It is a plant pigment found in many fruits and vegetables, such as apples, onions, berries, and leafy greens. Quercetin is known for its antioxidant effects, which means it can help protect the body’s cells from damage.

The study, published in the journal Nutrition Reviews, looked at data from 17 clinical trials involving a total of 896 people. The goal was to understand how quercetin affects important health markers, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. These factors are closely linked to heart health and overall wellbeing.

The results showed that quercetin may help lower blood pressure. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were reduced in people who took quercetin. Systolic blood pressure is the top number in a reading and shows the pressure in the arteries when the heart is beating.

Diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number and shows the pressure when the heart is resting between beats. Lowering both numbers is important because it reduces the strain on the heart and lowers the risk of serious conditions like heart attacks and strokes.

While the effects on blood pressure were clear, the study found that quercetin did not have a strong overall effect on cholesterol or blood sugar levels. However, there was an interesting finding when the researchers looked at longer-term use. When people took quercetin for eight weeks or more, there were improvements in certain blood fats.

In these longer studies, levels of HDL cholesterol increased. HDL is often called “good” cholesterol because it helps remove harmful cholesterol from the blood. At the same time, triglyceride levels improved.

Triglycerides are another type of fat in the blood, and high levels can raise the risk of heart disease. These changes suggest that quercetin may have added benefits when used over a longer period.

It is important to understand that the results are not perfect or final. The people in the 17 studies had different health conditions. Some were healthy, while others had issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, or high blood pressure. The studies also used different methods and doses. Because of this, the findings may not apply to everyone in the same way.

Even so, the research is important because it highlights a simple and natural option that may support heart health. Heart disease and stroke remain leading causes of death worldwide. Both are strongly linked to high blood pressure, along with other risk factors such as smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, and excess weight.

Managing these risks is key to staying healthy. While medications are often needed, lifestyle changes are also very powerful. Eating a balanced diet, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight can all help control blood pressure. Adding natural compounds like quercetin may provide extra support.

However, quercetin should not replace medical treatment. People should always speak with their doctor before starting any supplement, especially if they already take medications or have existing health conditions.

In the future, more research will help scientists better understand how quercetin works and who can benefit the most from it. For now, this study offers encouraging evidence that a natural compound found in everyday foods may play a role in protecting heart health and lowering blood pressure.
