Your heart works non-stop, pumping blood to every part of your body. But for some people, their heart begins to struggle.
This condition is called heart failure. When this happens, the heart can’t pump blood properly.
People with heart failure often feel tired all the time, get out of breath easily, and may notice swelling in their legs and feet.
Now think about trying to sleep but waking up often because you can’t breathe. That’s what sleep apnea is like. It’s a condition where a person’s breathing starts and stops many times during the night. It’s like gasping for air while trying to rest.
These two problems—heart failure and sleep apnea—may seem unrelated, but researchers have found that they are closely connected. In fact, having sleep apnea can make heart failure worse.
Scientists from the University of Auckland have been studying a new drug called AF-130 that could help treat both of these problems. Here’s how it works.
When you get scared or stressed, your body reacts by speeding up your heart. This is part of the “fight or flight” response. In people with heart failure, this system stays switched on all the time, even when there’s no danger. This constant overreaction can lead to sleep apnea and make heart failure worse.
AF-130 is designed to calm this overactive system. By doing this, it may help people breathe better at night and also reduce the strain on their heart. In short, this new pill could help you sleep better and improve how your heart works.
Right now, many people with sleep apnea use a CPAP machine. This machine helps keep the airway open so they can breathe during sleep. But some people find the CPAP machine uncomfortable or hard to use. AF-130 could be a simpler option—just one pill to help both sleep and heart problems.
Even more interesting is that AF-130 might be close to getting approval from the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), though not for sleep apnea or heart failure just yet. It’s being considered for a different condition. If it gets approved, that could make it easier for scientists to test it for sleep and heart issues later on.
Still, it’s important to know that AF-130 is not available yet for these problems. More studies are needed to make sure it works and is safe for people to use. The research is ongoing.
Even so, AF-130 brings new hope. If future studies prove its benefits, it could become a powerful tool—offering help for both the heart and sleep with a single pill. For now, scientists are continuing their research, and many are hopeful that this little pill might one day make a big difference.
