But scientists are now learning that pollution may continue damaging the body long after it leaves the lungs.
A new study from Taiwan has revealed that tiny pollution particles called PM2.5 could also make bladder cancer more dangerous. The research, published in Particle and Fibre Toxicology, explains one possible reason why people exposed to high levels of air pollution may face worse cancer outcomes.
PM2.5 particles are about thirty times smaller than the width of a human hair. Because of their tiny size, they can travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. The kidneys then help remove some of these pollutants from the body.
Instead of disappearing immediately, some chemicals become concentrated in urine and remain in contact with the bladder lining. This means bladder cells may be exposed to pollution again and again every day.
To understand what happens next, the scientists examined bladder cancer cells after PM2.5 exposure. They found that the particles altered the cells in ways that could help cancer spread. The exposed cells became better at moving and invading nearby tissue.
These changes are part of a process known as epithelial-mesenchymal transition, in which cancer cells lose their normal structure and gain the ability to travel more easily through the body.
The researchers also identified several molecular signals activated by the pollution. These signals may become future targets for medicines designed to slow cancer progression. If scientists can block these pathways, they may be able to reduce some of the harmful effects caused by long-term exposure to polluted air.
The discovery has wider public health implications. Air pollution affects billions of people worldwide, especially in busy cities and industrial regions. Even people who do not smoke may be exposed to unhealthy levels of PM2.5 every day. Improving air quality could therefore benefit many organs throughout the body, including the urinary system.
The study also highlights how closely environmental health and human health are connected. Preventing pollution is often easier and less expensive than treating advanced disease. Cleaner transport, lower industrial emissions, and stronger environmental policies may all contribute to reducing long-term health risks.
Although this research is encouraging, it represents an early step. The experiments provide a strong biological explanation, but larger studies involving patients will be needed before doctors can apply the findings directly in medical care. Scientists also need to determine whether reducing pollution exposure after a cancer diagnosis changes patient outcomes.
