The tiredness test: how fatigue predicts early death in older people

Have you ever felt really tired after doing something, like walking, cleaning, or gardening? Well, scientists from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States have found something interesting.

They discovered that for older people, how tired they feel after doing certain activities can help predict if they might pass away in less than three years.

Fatigue and Lifespan

In their study, the scientists found that older people who felt the most tired or worn out after doing things were more than twice as likely to pass away in the next 2.7 years.

It’s already known that doing more physical activities can help reduce how tired a person feels. But this study is the first to link feeling more physically tired to a shorter lifespan.

The Study: How Was It Done?

The scientists tested a group of 2,906 people who were 60 years old or older. They asked these people to rate on a scale of 0 to 5 how tired they thought they would feel after doing certain activities.

These activities included things like going for a slow 30-minute walk, doing light housework, or doing heavy gardening.

The scientists then looked at these “tiredness” scores and compared them with how long each person lived after the test.

They found that people who scored 25 or higher on their “tiredness” scale were 2.3 times more likely to pass away in the 2.7 years after the test.

They found this to be true even after considering other things that can affect how long a person lives.

The Importance of the Tiredness Scale

Besides showing that higher tiredness can predict a shorter lifespan, the study also showed that the “tiredness” scale they used was valuable.

This scale, known as the Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale, was created in 2014 and has been translated into 11 different languages. It’s a useful tool for measuring how tired people feel after doing different activities.

The Takeaway

This study teaches us an important lesson: how tired you feel after doing things could be a sign of how long you might live. This is especially true for older people.

So, it’s important to keep an eye on how tired you feel. If you’re feeling really tired all the time, it might be a good idea to talk to a doctor about it.

The findings from this study were published in a scientific journal called The Journals of Gerontology: Series A, and the research was led by a scientist named Nancy W. Glynn.
