
Inflammation is one of the body’s natural defense systems. When you are injured or develop an infection, the immune system sends cells and chemical signals to the affected area to fight germs and begin repairs.
This short-term response is useful and usually disappears once the problem is under control. Trouble can develop when inflammation continues for months or years, keeping the immune system active even when there is no immediate threat.
Long-lasting inflammation has been linked to many health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers. Diet is only one part of this complicated process, but several vitamins are involved in controlling immune activity and protecting cells from damage.
Vitamin D has attracted particular attention. The body can make vitamin D when skin is exposed to sunlight, and it can also be obtained from foods such as oily fish, egg yolks and fortified products.
Vitamin D does much more than support healthy bones. Research published in journals including Nature Reviews Immunology has described its important role in controlling immune responses and the production of substances involved in inflammation.
Low vitamin D levels are often found in people with inflammatory diseases. However, this does not prove that vitamin D deficiency is the cause, and studies of supplements have produced mixed results, so taking extra vitamin D is not a universal treatment for inflammation.
Vitamin C may also help protect the body. Found in foods such as oranges, kiwifruit, strawberries, tomatoes and bell peppers, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant and helps protect cells from damage caused by highly reactive molecules produced during normal metabolism and inflammation.
Research published in Nutrients and other scientific journals has examined whether vitamin C can influence inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, or CRP. Some studies suggest benefits, particularly in people with low vitamin C intake or certain health conditions, but results vary.
Vitamin E is another antioxidant nutrient. Nuts, seeds and vegetable oils are important sources, and smaller amounts are found in foods including spinach and other green vegetables.
Studies have investigated whether vitamin E can lower inflammatory markers by reducing damage to cells. Some research has found improvements, but evidence does not support using high-dose vitamin E supplements as a general treatment for chronic inflammation.
Several B vitamins also play roles in processes connected with inflammation. Vitamins B6, B9, also known as folate, and B12 help the body process homocysteine, an amino acid that can build up in the blood when these nutrients are lacking.
High homocysteine levels have been associated with cardiovascular disease and inflammation. Getting enough B vitamins can prevent deficiency and help keep homocysteine under control, although lowering homocysteine with supplements has not consistently been shown to prevent heart attacks or other major diseases.
For most people, the safest approach is to obtain vitamins through a varied diet rather than taking large doses of supplements. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fish and other nutrient-rich foods provide vitamins together with fiber, minerals and many other useful compounds.
Supplements can be valuable when a person has a diagnosed deficiency or cannot obtain enough of a nutrient from food. But more is not always better, because excessive doses of some vitamins can cause side effects or interact with medicines.
Chronic inflammation also cannot usually be solved by one nutrient. Regular physical activity, enough sleep, avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and managing conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes can all influence inflammatory health.
Vitamins therefore have an important supporting role rather than acting as a simple cure. Maintaining adequate vitamin levels as part of a balanced diet can help the immune system work normally and give the body the nutrients it needs to protect and repair itself.
