
When people have a routine blood test, they often notice unfamiliar medical terms on the report. One of these is creatinine.
Although it is only a small number on the page, it gives doctors valuable information about how well the kidneys are working.
Creatinine is a waste product made when muscles produce energy during normal daily activities. Everyone makes creatinine every day, and the body does not need it. Healthy kidneys remove it from the blood and send it out of the body through urine.
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located near the lower back. Their main job is to filter waste products, extra water, and other unwanted substances from the blood.

One of the most common causes is chronic kidney disease, or CKD, which develops slowly over many years. In the early stages, people often feel completely healthy, even though kidney damage has already begun. Research published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases has shown that rising creatinine levels can be an early clue to kidney disease before symptoms appear.
High creatinine can also have other causes. Dehydration may temporarily raise the level because there is less fluid to remove waste from the body. Some infections, certain antibiotics, and common pain-relieving medicines can also affect kidney function. A sudden loss of kidney function, known as acute kidney injury, may occur after severe illness, major surgery, or significant fluid loss, but it can sometimes improve if treated quickly.
Doctors usually do not rely on creatinine alone. They also calculate the estimated glomerular filtration rate, or eGFR, which estimates how well the kidneys are filtering blood. According to the National Kidney Foundation, an eGFR below 60 for three months or longer is usually a sign of chronic kidney disease.
Not every high creatinine result means permanent kidney damage. Very intense exercise can temporarily increase creatinine because it causes more muscle breakdown. In these situations, doctors may repeat the blood test after a short time to see whether the level returns to normal.
If kidney disease is found, treatment focuses on slowing further damage. Doctors may recommend controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes, reducing salt intake, avoiding medicines that can harm the kidneys, drinking enough water, maintaining a healthy weight, and following a balanced diet. These steps can help protect kidney function for many years.
In advanced kidney disease, creatinine levels may become very high because the kidneys can no longer remove waste effectively. People may develop tiredness, swelling in the legs, confusion, or shortness of breath. Some patients eventually need dialysis or a kidney transplant if the kidneys stop working properly.
Overall, creatinine is not a disease but an important warning signal. A simple blood test can detect kidney problems early, giving doctors and patients the chance to slow or even prevent further damage.
