In a groundbreaking international study, researchers from TU Darmstadt, the University of Cambridge, Merck, and TU Munich’s Klinikum rechts der Isar have joined forces to explore the potential of software systems, particularly machine learning (ML), in enhancing human work.
This study, focusing on radiologists, sheds light on how ML systems can support and improve human learning and decision-making in medical diagnostics and beyond.
The study, spearheaded by Sara Ellenrieder and Professor Peter Buxmann from TU Darmstadt, delved into using ML-based decision support systems in radiology.
Their primary focus was on the manual segmentation of brain tumors in MRI images – a critical and intricate task in radiology.
The goal was to understand how radiologists could not only use these ML systems in their daily tasks but also learn from them to enhance their own skills and confidence in making decisions.
The team performed an experiment involving radiologists from various clinics to conduct their research.
These professionals were tasked with segmenting brain tumors in MRI images, both with and without the aid of ML-based decision support.
The ML systems varied in their performance levels and their ability to explain their output. The researchers collected both quantitative data on the radiologists’ performance and qualitative data through interviews and observing the radiologists as they worked and thought aloud.
The experiment resulted in 690 manual tumor segmentations by the radiologists.
The findings were revealing: when radiologists worked with high-performing ML systems, their performance improved significantly through interaction with the system. They could learn from the information provided and enhance their diagnostic skills.
However, the study also highlighted a crucial aspect of ML systems: their explainability. When the ML output was not easily understandable, especially in lower-performing systems, it could actually impair the radiologists’ performance.
On the flip side, when explanations were provided, not only did the radiologists learn better, but they also avoided assimilating incorrect information. In some cases, they could even learn from the errors made by the ML systems, provided these errors were explained.
Professor Buxmann summarized the essence of the study by emphasizing the need for explainable and transparent AI systems.
Such systems can empower end-users – in this case, radiologists – to learn and make better, more informed decisions over time.
This study is not just relevant for the field of radiology; it has broader implications. In an age where AI tools like ChatGPT are becoming a daily part of many professions, the lessons learned here apply widely.
Understanding and interacting with ML outputs can enhance skills and decision-making in various fields, underscoring the importance of developing AI systems that are not just powerful but also transparent and understandable.
