In a new study, researchers found that using fresh avocado as a substitute for refined carbohydrates could suppress hunger and increase meal satisfaction.
This may help overweight and obese adults eat fewer calories and reduce body weight.
The research was conducted by a team from the Center for Nutrition Research at Illinois Institute of Technology
The rates of obesity in the United States continue to rise, and it is important to find a practical way to help people control weight.
In the study, the team examined the effects of eating whole and half fresh Hass avocados on people’s hunger and fullness over a six-hour period.
They tested 31 overweight and obese adults.
The researchers found meals including avocado led to a big reduction in hunger and an increase in how satisfied participants felt.
These dietary changes limit insulin and blood glucose excursions, and further reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
The team suggests that avocado can provide healthy fats and fibers to a regular daily diet and can help manage hunger and improve metabolic control.
Adding avocado to daily meals is a simple dietary change that can have an important impact on people’s health.
The lead author of the study is Britt Burton-Freeman, Ph.D., director of the Center for Nutrition Research at Illinois Tech.
The study is published in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrients.
