Common Heart Drugs May Disrupt Your Sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for both physical and mental health.

During sleep, the body repairs itself, the brain processes information, and systems that control mood, immunity, and energy have a chance to reset.

Yet sleep problems are very common. In the United States, roughly one in three adults does not regularly get enough sleep, and ongoing sleep loss has been linked to problems with concentration, mood, heart health, and the immune system.

Medicines can sometimes affect sleep as well. One widely used group of drugs called beta-blockers has long been suspected of causing problems such as depression, tiredness, unusual dreams, and difficulty sleeping.

Beta-blockers reduce the effects of stress hormones such as adrenaline on the heart. This can slow the heartbeat and reduce the force with which the heart pumps, lowering the amount of work the heart has to do.

Doctors use these medicines for several conditions, including high blood pressure, chest pain, some abnormal heart rhythms, and certain forms of heart disease. Because many people take them for long periods, understanding their possible side effects is important.

Researchers led by Reinhold Kreutz at the Berlin Institute of Health examined whether beta-blockers really increase the risk of depression and other mental health problems. The research was published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension.

The team analyzed information from more than 50,000 people included in 258 studies. Most of the studies involved people taking beta-blockers to treat high blood pressure.

The results offered reassurance about one long-standing concern. People taking beta-blockers were not more likely to develop depression than people receiving other treatments or a placebo, which is an inactive treatment used for comparison in research.

People taking beta-blockers were also not more likely to stop treatment because of depression. This suggests that fears about depression may have been stronger than the evidence supporting a direct connection.

However, the researchers did find links with some other effects involving the brain and nervous system. Sleep-related problems, including insomnia and unusual dreams, were reported more often among people taking beta-blockers.

These effects were generally not considered severe, but they could still affect quality of life. Poor sleep can leave people feeling less rested during the day and may make it harder to concentrate or maintain normal energy levels.

Fatigue was another important finding. In fact, feeling unusually tired was the most common reason people taking beta-blockers stopped treatment during the studies.

Researchers also found that side effects were not necessarily the same for every beta-blocker. Some drugs can enter the brain more easily than others, which may help explain why certain medicines are more strongly linked with sleep disturbances or unusual dreams.

The findings do not mean that people should stop taking beta-blockers if they have trouble sleeping. Suddenly stopping some beta-blockers can cause the heart rate or blood pressure to rise and may be dangerous for people with certain heart conditions.

Instead, people who develop persistent fatigue, insomnia, vivid dreams, or other troublesome symptoms should discuss them with their doctor. A doctor may be able to adjust the dose, change the timing of the medicine, or consider another treatment when appropriate.

The study helps separate a long-standing fear from better-supported side effects. Beta-blockers do not appear to substantially increase the risk of depression, but sleep problems and fatigue deserve attention because they can affect how people feel and function every day.
