
Millions of people take medicine every day to control high blood pressure and lower their risk of heart attacks and strokes. One of the most widely used groups of medicines is called calcium channel blockers, often shortened to CCBs.
These drugs have been safely used for many years to treat high blood pressure and some heart conditions. Now, a large study from the United Kingdom suggests they may also be linked to a higher chance of developing glaucoma, a serious eye disease.
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness around the world. It damages the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. Once this nerve is damaged, the lost vision usually cannot be restored.
The disease often develops slowly and without obvious symptoms, so many people do not realize they have glaucoma until their eyesight has already been affected.
Because early glaucoma rarely causes pain or noticeable vision problems, regular eye examinations are important, especially for older adults and people with a family history of the disease. Detecting glaucoma early allows doctors to begin treatment that can slow or prevent further vision loss.
The new study was carried out by researchers led by Dr. Alan Kastner from Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London. The team examined health information from more than 427,000 people in the United Kingdom, including over 33,000 people who were taking calcium channel blockers.
They also considered many other factors that could influence eye health, including age, smoking, lifestyle, and other medical conditions.
The researchers found that people taking calcium channel blockers were more likely to have glaucoma than people who were not taking these medicines. Interestingly, this pattern was not seen with other common blood pressure drugs, suggesting the link may be specific to calcium channel blockers.
One surprising finding was that many people with glaucoma in the study did not have unusually high pressure inside their eyes. Eye pressure is a well-known risk factor for glaucoma, but the results suggest calcium channel blockers could be influencing the disease through another pathway. More research is needed to understand exactly how this might happen.
The researchers stress that this study does not prove the medicines directly cause glaucoma. It only shows an association between taking calcium channel blockers and having the condition. Other factors that were not measured could still play a role, and future studies will be needed to confirm the findings.
If you take a calcium channel blocker, experts do not recommend stopping your medication because of this study. These medicines are highly effective at controlling blood pressure and protecting the heart. Instead, patients should discuss any concerns with their doctor and continue taking their medication unless advised otherwise.
For people who take calcium channel blockers for many years, regular eye examinations may be especially worthwhile, particularly if they have a family history of glaucoma or other risk factors. Early detection remains the best way to protect vision and reduce the risk of permanent sight loss.
The researchers also noted that some study authors have previously worked with pharmaceutical companies, a disclosure that is standard in medical research.
The findings were published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology and add important new evidence about how commonly prescribed medicines may affect eye health. More studies will now be needed to determine whether the relationship is real and whether doctors should change the way they monitor patients taking these medications.
