Your heart works every second of every day to pump blood around your body. When it becomes too weak to do this properly, the condition is called heart failure.

Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped working, but it means the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.

People with heart failure often feel very tired, become short of breath during simple activities, and may develop swelling in their legs, ankles, or feet.

Many people with heart failure also have sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during the night.

These breathing pauses can wake people many times without them realizing it, leading to poor sleep, daytime tiredness, and lower oxygen levels. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can place extra stress on the heart and make heart failure harder to manage.

Researchers at the University of Auckland are studying a new medicine called AF-130 that may one day help with both conditions. Their findings have been published in the journal Circulation Research. The team hopes the drug could improve breathing during sleep while also reducing pressure on the heart.

The idea behind AF-130 comes from understanding how the body reacts to stress. When people are frightened or under pressure, the nervous system speeds up the heart and prepares the body for action.

In many people with heart failure, this stress response stays active even when there is no danger. Scientists believe this ongoing overactivity can worsen heart function and contribute to sleep apnea.

AF-130 is designed to calm this overactive response. By reducing the constant stress signals, the medicine may help people breathe more normally during sleep while giving the heart a chance to work with less strain. If successful, one treatment could improve both sleep quality and heart health at the same time.

Today, the most common treatment for many forms of sleep apnea is a CPAP machine, which uses gentle air pressure to keep the airway open during sleep. Although CPAP can be very effective, some people find the mask uncomfortable or struggle to use it every night. A medicine taken as a pill could offer another option if future studies confirm that it works.

Researchers say AF-130 may already be moving toward approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a different medical condition. If that happens, it could make future studies for heart failure and sleep apnea easier. However, the medicine has not been approved for these conditions, and people should not expect it to replace current treatments yet.

More clinical studies are still needed to show that AF-130 is both safe and effective for people with heart failure and sleep apnea.

Even so, the early research is encouraging and suggests that targeting the body’s stress response could open a new way to treat two closely linked health problems. If future trials are successful, one small pill could eventually help many people sleep better while protecting their hearts.
