
Treating high blood pressure is one of the most effective ways to prevent heart disease and stroke. However, many people worry about possible side effects when they begin taking medication.

Beta blockers are especially useful after heart attacks and for some heart rhythm disorders. Possible side effects include fatigue, slower heart rate, cold hands and feet, and vivid dreams. They may also worsen asthma symptoms in some people.
Other medicines, including alpha blockers and central-acting drugs, are generally reserved for specific situations because they may cause dizziness, sleepiness or low blood pressure when standing. Doctors balance these risks against the potential benefits for each individual patient.
Research consistently shows that lifestyle changes such as reducing salt, eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight and limiting alcohol can improve blood pressure and sometimes reduce the amount of medication needed. Even so, many people still require medicine to achieve safe blood pressure levels.
The overall scientific evidence is reassuring. The proven ability of blood pressure medicines to prevent strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure and early death is far greater than the risk of side effects for most people.
If side effects develop, patients should speak with their healthcare provider rather than stopping treatment on their own, because another medicine is often a better solution.
