
As people live longer than ever before, scientists are searching for safe ways to help them stay healthy in old age.
Instead of simply adding more years to life, researchers want to increase the number of years people can enjoy good health and remain independent.
A new study suggests that a medicine already used to treat high blood pressure could one day become part of that effort.
The research was carried out by scientists at the University of Liverpool and led by Professor João Pedro Magalhães.
Their findings were published in the journal Aging Cell. The team studied a blood pressure medicine called rilmenidine and discovered that it may slow some of the biological processes linked to aging.
What makes this finding especially interesting is that rilmenidine is not a new drug. It has already been prescribed for many years to treat high blood pressure in some countries. Because doctors already know a great deal about its safety and it is taken as a tablet with generally mild side effects, it could be easier to test for new medical uses than a completely new medicine.
In the study, the researchers treated animals with rilmenidine when they were young as well as later in life. In both cases, the treated animals lived longer and showed signs of better health as they aged. This suggests the medicine may improve not only lifespan but also healthspan, which refers to the years people remain healthy and active.
The benefits closely resembled those seen in studies of calorie restriction. For decades, scientists have known that reducing calorie intake while still providing all essential nutrients can extend life and improve health in many animals, including worms, flies, mice, and several other species. This has made calorie restriction one of the most reliable research tools for studying healthy aging.
However, following a strict calorie-restricted diet is difficult for most people. Eating much less food over a long period can lead to tiredness, loss of muscle, mood changes, and other unwanted effects. Because of these challenges, researchers have been searching for medicines that can produce similar benefits without requiring people to make such major changes to their diets.
The Liverpool team found that rilmenidine appears to work by activating a protein known as the I1-imidazoline receptor, also called nish-1. This receptor helps control important activities inside cells, including some that influence how the body ages. Stimulating this pathway may allow the body to maintain healthier function for a longer time.
The discovery is encouraging because it shows that existing medicines may have valuable uses beyond their original purpose. Reusing approved drugs can often save years of development compared with creating a completely new treatment from the beginning. It may also reduce costs and speed up future clinical research if the medicine proves effective in people.
Although these findings are promising, the research has not yet shown that rilmenidine can slow aging in humans. More studies and carefully designed clinical trials will be needed before doctors could recommend the medicine for this purpose. Scientists must also determine the safest doses and identify who might benefit the most.
Even so, the study published in Aging Cell offers fresh hope that healthy aging could one day be supported by medicines that are already available. As populations continue to age around the world, discoveries like this could help people enjoy more active, independent, and healthier lives for longer.
