
As people grow older, many find that everyday activities such as climbing stairs, standing up from a chair, or carrying shopping bags become more difficult.
It is often believed that this happens because muscles naturally become smaller and weaker with age.
While muscle loss is an important part of aging, scientists are now discovering that it may not tell the whole story. New research suggests that the brain and nervous system may play a much bigger role in age-related weakness than many people realize.
A research team from Ohio University, led by Brian Clark, wanted to learn why some older adults lose more strength than others. Their study, published in JAMA Network Open, included 66 men and women in their seventies.
The scientists focused on the muscles at the front of the thigh that straighten the knee because these muscles are important for walking, standing, and keeping balance.
Each volunteer was asked to push against a piece of equipment with as much force as possible using their leg muscles. This allowed the researchers to measure how much strength each person could produce on their own. After that, the team applied a brief and safe electrical stimulation to the same muscles.
The gentle electrical pulse helped activate muscle fibers that may not have been fully switched on during the first test. If the muscle became much stronger after the stimulation, it suggested that the muscle itself still had the ability to produce more force. Instead, the signals coming from the brain and nerves were not fully activating the muscle.
The findings surprised the researchers. The participants who were weakest during the first test experienced the largest improvement after electrical stimulation. On average, their strength increased by 14.2 percent, which was about twice the improvement seen in people who were already stronger.
These results suggest that weakness in many older adults may not simply be caused by worn-out muscles. Problems in the communication between the brain, nerves, and muscles may also limit strength. In other words, the body may still have untapped power that is not being fully used.
This discovery could change how doctors, therapists, and exercise experts think about healthy aging. Strength training remains one of the best ways to protect muscles, improve movement, and reduce the risk of falls. However, the new findings suggest that exercises challenging balance, coordination, and movement control may also be valuable because they help train the nervous system as well as the muscles.
The study also raises the possibility of future treatments that directly support nerve function or use carefully designed electrical stimulation to improve muscle activation. More research is needed before such treatments become common, but the findings open an exciting new direction for helping older adults remain active and independent.
For now, experts still encourage older adults to stay physically active with a mixture of walking, strength exercises, balance training, and other regular movement.
Looking after both muscles and the nervous system may provide the best chance of maintaining strength and quality of life as people age. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, offers a fresh way to understand aging by showing that the brain can be just as important as the muscles when it comes to staying strong.
