
Imagine a world where digital screens only appear when you actually need them. Instead of filling homes, offices, and public spaces with permanent displays, a small device could create an interactive screen on demand and then make it disappear once the task is finished.
That futuristic idea is now one step closer to reality thanks to a new invention from researchers at the University of Chicago.
The device, called BloomBeacon, was designed to create temporary touch-sensitive displays that emerge from everyday objects and surfaces only when needed.
The researchers hope this approach will reduce visual clutter while making technology more flexible and easier to use in daily life.
BloomBeacon is a small box with two soft spinning arms mounted on top. One arm contains rows of LED lights that form a digital display, while the other arm detects touch.
When the device is activated, the arms spin rapidly together, creating what looks like a floating interactive screen. Users can safely touch the spinning display because the arms are made from soft materials.
If they come into contact with something unexpected, such as a person’s hand or hair, they automatically slow down or stop to prevent injury.
The project was developed by University of Chicago graduate student Willa Yang under the supervision of Assistant Professor Ken Nakagaki in the university’s AxLab, a research group focused on creating technology that blends naturally into everyday life.
Yang explained that while digital screens are excellent for displaying information and allowing people to interact with technology, they usually come with drawbacks. People either have to carry them everywhere, such as smartphones and tablets, or install permanent screens in homes and workplaces. Both options can create unnecessary clutter and limit where digital information can appear.
BloomBeacon takes a different approach by creating a larger display only when it is actually needed. Once the task is complete, the screen disappears, allowing the surrounding space to return to normal.
The researchers believe this technology could have many practical uses. In schools, libraries, or design studios, it could project interactive information directly onto paper maps, adding weather forecasts, traffic updates, or heat maps only when required. In homes, it could display album artwork and music controls next to a speaker without needing a permanent screen. In workplaces and laboratories, it could provide instant safety warnings. For example, the researchers demonstrated a version that detects when someone reaches for a bottle of hazardous chemicals without wearing protective gloves and immediately displays a warning message.
Because the screen appears only when needed, the researchers believe it could make digital technology feel less intrusive while still providing helpful information exactly where and when it is useful.
The team also sees room for future improvements. As sensors become faster and artificial intelligence becomes more advanced, future versions could react even more quickly to changing situations. Yang envisions a device that remains almost invisible until needed, shrinking to little more than a tiny dot before expanding into a full interactive display in seconds.
The researchers hope inventions like BloomBeacon will encourage a future where people have greater control over how technology fits into their surroundings. Rather than forcing people to adapt to fixed screens everywhere they go, they believe technology should quietly adapt to people’s needs, appearing only when it can genuinely make life easier.
