Scientists in Sweden have developed a new type of drug that could help people with type 2 diabetes and obesity in a safer and simpler way.

This new treatment may lower blood sugar levels and help the body burn fat more effectively, without causing some of the common side effects seen in current medicines. The research was published in the journal Cell and carried out by scientists from Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University.

Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition that affects how the body uses sugar. Normally, the body uses a hormone called insulin to move sugar from the blood into cells for energy. In people with type 2 diabetes, the body does not respond well to insulin. This leads to high blood sugar levels, which over time can damage the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

Obesity, which means having too much body fat, often occurs together with type 2 diabetes. These two conditions are closely linked and can make each other worse. People with both conditions have a higher risk of serious health problems, including heart disease and stroke.

At the moment, one of the most popular treatments for type 2 diabetes and obesity is a group of drugs known as GLP-1 medicines. These drugs, such as Ozempic, work by affecting signals between the brain and the digestive system.

They help control blood sugar and reduce appetite, which can lead to weight loss. However, they are usually given as injections and often come with side effects such as nausea, tiredness, stomach discomfort, and even loss of muscle.

The new drug developed in this study works in a completely different way. Instead of acting on the brain or gut, it targets the muscles. It is taken as a pill, which makes it easier to use. The drug helps muscles use sugar and fat more efficiently, increasing the body’s metabolism. This means the body can burn more energy without needing to reduce food intake.

In experiments with animals, the drug successfully lowered blood sugar levels and increased fat burning. Importantly, it did not cause major side effects. The researchers then tested the drug in a small group of people to see if it was safe.

The study included 48 healthy participants and 25 people with type 2 diabetes. All participants tolerated the drug well, and no serious side effects were reported.

One of the lead researchers, Professor Tore Bengtsson from Stockholm University, explained that preserving muscle mass is very important for people with diabetes and obesity.

Muscle helps control blood sugar and supports overall health. Many current treatments can lead to muscle loss, which is not ideal. This new drug may help protect muscle while improving metabolism.

The drug is based on a synthetic molecule that works in a similar way to substances known as beta-2 agonists. These are often used to treat asthma because they help open the airways.

However, traditional beta-2 agonists can sometimes increase heart rate too much. The new drug has been carefully designed to avoid this problem. It boosts muscle activity without putting extra stress on the heart.

Another researcher, Dr. Shane Wright from Karolinska Institutet, said that the pill form of the drug makes it more convenient for patients. He also noted that it could be used together with existing treatments like GLP-1 drugs, since they work through different pathways. This could give doctors more options when designing treatment plans.

The drug is being developed by a company called Atrogi AB. The company plans to begin larger clinical trials soon to test the drug in more people with type 2 diabetes and obesity. These studies will help confirm whether the drug is effective and safe over a longer period and in a larger population.

This research involved collaboration between several institutions, including Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University, Uppsala University, and universities in Denmark and Australia. Such teamwork highlights the global effort to find better treatments for common and serious health conditions.

Overall, this new drug shows strong early promise. It may offer a new way to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity by lowering blood sugar, increasing fat burning, and protecting muscle mass. It also avoids many of the unwanted side effects linked to current treatments.

Although the results are encouraging, more research is needed before the drug becomes widely available. If future studies confirm these findings, this pill could become an important new option for millions of people living with these conditions.
