Have you ever suddenly felt dizzy, lightheaded, or as if the room was spinning? Many people ignore these feelings, thinking they are caused by stress, tiredness, or not eating enough. But new research suggests that dizziness and vertigo may be signs of something more serious, especially migraines.

Migraines are not just ordinary headaches. They can cause severe pain, usually on one side of the head, and often come with other problems such as nausea, vomiting, and strong sensitivity to light or noise.

Some people cannot work, study, or even get out of bed during a migraine attack. Migraines affect millions of people around the world and are one of the leading causes of disability.

A new study from Peking University in China has found a strong link between dizziness, vertigo, and migraines. The research team, led by scientist Tongxiang Diao, wanted to understand whether these balance problems could be early signs of migraine.

To explore this question, they collected health information from 708 nurses working in a large hospital. Nurses were chosen because they are trained to notice health changes and can describe their symptoms clearly.

The participants were divided into three groups. One group had no headaches, another group had migraines, and the third group had other types of headaches.

The researchers compared how often people in each group experienced dizziness or vertigo. Vertigo is a stronger feeling than simple dizziness. It makes a person feel as if they or their surroundings are spinning, even when they are standing still.

The results were striking. About 28.7 percent of the nurses said they had headaches, and 13.3 percent had migraines. A total of 235 people reported that they had experienced dizziness or vertigo at some point.

When the researchers looked more closely, they found that people who felt dizzy or had vertigo were much more likely to also suffer from headaches, especially migraines.

People who experienced vertigo were almost three times more likely to have migraines or other headaches compared with those who did not have vertigo. Even more surprising, people who often felt dizzy were more than eight times more likely to have migraines. This suggests that dizziness may be a strong warning sign that migraines could develop.

Doctors have known for some time that balance problems can be linked to a special type of migraine called vestibular migraine. This type does not always cause severe head pain.

Instead, people may mainly feel dizzy, unsteady, or sensitive to movement. Because the symptoms are different from typical migraines, many people do not realize what is happening, and the condition may go undiagnosed for years.

The study also suggests that even people who do not have full vertigo may still have hidden balance problems connected to migraines.

This means that doctors should pay attention when patients report frequent dizziness, even if they do not complain about headaches. Early diagnosis can help people get the right treatment sooner and avoid years of discomfort.

Dizziness can have many causes, including inner ear problems, low blood pressure, anxiety, or side effects from medication. However, this research shows that migraines should also be considered as a possible cause. If someone often feels dizzy without a clear reason, it may be helpful to talk to a doctor and describe all symptoms carefully.

Understanding this connection is important because migraines can greatly affect daily life. They can interrupt work, school, family activities, and sleep. With proper treatment, many people can reduce how often migraines occur and how severe they are.

This research gives hope that simple symptoms like dizziness could help doctors detect migraines earlier. Paying attention to the body’s warning signs may lead to faster treatment and a better quality of life.
