Diabetes happens when there is too much sugar in the blood. Over time, this can make it harder to keep blood sugar at a healthy level.
If not controlled, it can cause serious health problems. One kind of medicine that can help is semaglutide.
A recent study led by Dr. John Buse looked at how different amounts of semaglutide affect both blood sugar and body weight. The results were published in the medical journal The Lancet. The study found that bigger doses of the drug helped people lose more weight and also improved their blood sugar control.
Researchers tested three doses: 14 mg, 25 mg, and 50 mg. They found that all three helped lower blood sugar levels, but higher doses were more effective for weight loss.
On average, people taking 50 mg of semaglutide lost about 17.5 pounds in one year. Those who took 25 mg lost around 14.8 pounds. People on the lowest dose, 14 mg, lost about 10 pounds. Dr. Buse said that while the smaller dose is good for lowering blood sugar, the bigger doses help more with weight loss.
The study included 1,606 people. Most of them were men and their average age was 58 years old. Their starting blood sugar levels, measured using something called A1C, were between 8.0% and 10.5%. A healthy A1C level should be below 7%.
The participants were divided into three groups. Each group took one of the doses of semaglutide every day for a year. By the end of the study, those who took 25 mg or 50 mg were more likely to get their A1C level below 7%. This means their blood sugar was better controlled.
Semaglutide also helped people lose weight by making them feel less hungry. However, higher doses came with more side effects. The most common problems were stomach issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These were more likely to happen in people taking the 50 mg dose, but the side effects were usually not too serious.
This study shows that semaglutide can be a powerful tool for managing diabetes and helping people lose weight. Higher doses, such as 25 mg and 50 mg, work better for people who want to lose more weight and improve their blood sugar.
Still, people should talk to their doctors about the pros and cons. Higher doses can lead to more side effects, so it’s important to choose the right dose based on personal needs.
This research supports the idea that diabetes treatment should be tailored to each person. It is important to find the right balance between how well the treatment works and how comfortable it is to use.
The study was published in The Lancet. Other research has found links between diabetes and problems like poor sleep, vision loss, and kidney failure. Some studies also show that healthy foods like blueberries and nutrients like Vitamin D can help people with diabetes.
Taking steps to manage diabetes through medicine and healthy lifestyle choices can lead to better health and a better life.
