Why more young people are getting colon cancer

More and more young people under the age of 50 are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, which includes both colon and rectal cancer.

This is worrying for doctors and scientists, as this type of cancer used to be more common in older adults. Now, researchers are trying to understand why this is happening.

A new study published in the journal eBioMedicine offers an important clue. It shows that the bacteria found in the tumors of young patients are different from those in older patients. This difference may help explain why more young people are getting this disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, the number of new cases and deaths from colorectal cancer in young adults is rising every year. They even predict that by 2030, cases of colon cancer could double, and rectal cancer could become four times more common in young people. These predictions have alarmed health experts.

One of those experts is Dr. Alok Khorana, a cancer specialist at the Cleveland Clinic. He led the study and says the results are very concerning. His team used powerful genetic tools to look at tissue samples from both young and older patients with colorectal cancer.

They found that younger patients had more bacteria in their tumors, and some types of bacteria—like Akkermansia and Bacteroides—were more common in the younger group. These findings are important because they suggest that bacteria in the gut might be linked to cancer in young people.

This discovery could help doctors find new ways to detect and treat colorectal cancer. For example, if certain bacteria are linked to cancer, doctors could create tests to spot these bacteria early.

That way, they might catch the cancer before it becomes serious. There’s also hope that new treatments could be designed to target these specific bacteria and stop the cancer from growing.

The first authors of the study, Dr. Shimoli Barot and Dr. Naseer Sangwan, believe that the bacterial changes could lead to better tools for diagnosing and treating the disease. But they also say that more research is needed. Scientists still want to understand how things like diet, medicine, and body weight affect gut bacteria and the risk of getting this cancer.

This research is a big step toward learning why more young people are getting colorectal cancer. It shows how tiny organisms in our body might play a big role in our health. It also points to new ideas for stopping cancer before it starts or treating it more effectively.

Besides this study, other research has shown that regular physical activity may help prevent cancer. Getting enough vitamin D might lower your risk of dying from cancer. Eating yogurt and foods high in fiber may also help reduce the risk of lung cancer.

On top of that, scientists are working on exciting new treatments that boost the body’s immune system to fight cancer more strongly.

All of these discoveries highlight how important science and healthy habits are in the fight against cancer. By learning more about the causes and prevention of cancer, we can take better steps to protect ourselves and others.
