of Diabetes shows that Tirzepatide works better than Semaglutide in lowering blood sugar and helping with weight loss in people with Type 2 diabetes.

The research was led by Dr. Thomas Karagiannis and his team from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. They reviewed 22 different clinical studies that included more than 18,000 patients with Type 2 diabetes. They compared how well the two drugs worked and how safe they were.

Both Tirzepatide and Semaglutide are approved to treat Type 2 diabetes. Tirzepatide is also being looked at as a treatment for obesity.

The team found that Tirzepatide lowered HbA1c (a marker of long-term blood sugar levels) more than Semaglutide. A 15 mg dose of Tirzepatide reduced HbA1c by 2.00%, while a 10 mg dose reduced it by 1.86%. In comparison, Semaglutide at 2.0 mg reduced HbA1c by 1.62%.

Tirzepatide also helped patients lose more weight. The biggest difference was seen with the 15 mg dose, which led to about 5.72 kg more weight loss than Semaglutide 2.0 mg.

Both drugs increased the risk of stomach-related side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Tirzepatide at the highest dose (15 mg) showed the highest risk of these side effects.

However, most of the side effect differences between the two drugs were not statistically significant, except for a few cases where higher-dose Tirzepatide caused more nausea and vomiting than lower-dose Semaglutide.

Overall, Tirzepatide performed better than Semaglutide at controlling blood sugar and reducing body weight, especially at higher doses. But it also came with a higher risk of stomach side effects.

These results are important for doctors and patients making decisions about how to treat Type 2 diabetes. Understanding the benefits and possible side effects of each drug helps tailor treatments to fit individual needs.
