Diabetes is a condition where there is too much sugar in the blood. If not treated well, it can get worse over time.
This makes it hard for people to control their blood sugar. Some medications can help, and one of them is called semaglutide.
A new study led by well-known doctor John Buse and a team of researchers looked at how different doses of semaglutide work. Their study was published in the medical journal The Lancet.
They found that taking higher doses—25 mg or 50 mg—was more helpful than taking a smaller dose of 14 mg. People who took the bigger doses had better blood sugar levels and lost more weight.
Dr. Buse explained that small doses are already good at lowering sugar. But the larger doses help even more with weight loss. For example, people who took 50 mg lost around 17.5 pounds, which was more than those who took smaller amounts.
In the study, 1,606 people joined. Most were men around 58 years old. They were divided into three groups. Each group took a different dose of semaglutide: 14 mg, 25 mg, or 50 mg, every day for one year.
Doctors use a number called A1C to check how well blood sugar is controlled. Healthy adults should have an A1C under 7%. At the start of the study, everyone had A1C levels between 8.0% and 10.5%. By the end, the people taking 25 mg or 50 mg were more likely to reach an A1C below 7%. This shows that their sugar levels got much better.
The medicine also helped people lose weight by making them feel less hungry. After one year, people who took 50 mg lost about 17.5 pounds. Those who took 25 mg lost around 14.8 pounds. And those who took 14 mg lost about 10 pounds.
However, some people had side effects. The most common problem was stomach upset. Some people felt like throwing up, especially with the higher doses. Others had diarrhea or constipation.
In short, semaglutide is a helpful medicine for people with diabetes. It can lower blood sugar and help with weight loss. Bigger doses work better but may cause more stomach issues.
