A new study has found that mindfulness-based group therapy helps people recovering from opioid addiction by significantly reducing their cravings. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, compared a mindfulness-based recovery program to a standard recovery support group.
Both approaches were found to be effective in reducing anxiety and substance use, but mindfulness showed a greater impact on controlling opioid cravings.

The traditional recovery support group followed a different approach, using four evidence-based techniques to support addiction recovery, but without mindfulness training.
At the end of 24 weeks, researchers found that both groups had similar outcomes in terms of opioid use, as well as use of other substances like cocaine and benzodiazepines.
Both groups also experienced reductions in anxiety, showing that both types of support were helpful for mental health. However, the mindfulness-based group had a clear advantage in reducing opioid cravings.
