New super antibodies can fight all COVID-19 variants, study shows

A team of international scientists has made an exciting discovery. They found some very strong antibodies that can fight against all known versions of the COVID-19 virus.

This includes the omicron variant and other harmful coronaviruses found in animals, which might cause problems in the future. The study was published in Science Advances, a scientific journal.

These scientists came from several places, including the Duke-NUS Medical School, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Melbourne in Australia.

They studied the blood of a person who had once been sick with SARS but then got better. Later, this person got vaccinated against COVID-19.

This combination of having been sick with a coronavirus and getting a vaccine led to a very strong response from their body. Their body made antibodies that could stop nearly all related coronaviruses that were tested.

How These Antibodies Work

The scientists were able to find six of these super antibodies.

They could fight off multiple types of coronaviruses, including the original SARS virus and all known COVID-19 variants like alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and omicron. They could also fight off other coronaviruses from bats and pangolins.

Out of these six, three antibodies were exceptionally strong. One of them, called E7, was the strongest.

It could neutralize all tested SARS-related viruses and other animal viruses at very low amounts. This includes a new omicron variant, called omicron XBB.1.16.

E7 works by attaching itself to two parts of the virus’ spike protein. This spike protein is what the virus uses to get into our cells.

By attaching to the spike protein, E7 can stop the virus from changing shape, which it needs to do to infect our cells.

This discovery is very promising. It shows that we can make vaccines and drugs that work against all variants of the coronavirus, not just one or two.

It also shows that we can potentially make a universal coronavirus vaccine. This would be a vaccine that could protect us against any coronavirus, not just COVID-19.

The E7 antibody might be very helpful in preventing future pandemics caused by coronaviruses. The scientists plan to study it more to see how it can be used against current and future coronaviruses.

In the words of Professor Patrick Tan from Duke-NUS Medical School, “This work by Prof Wang and his team improves our ability to protect against coronavirus threats.

It could also help protect against new viruses that might emerge in the future. This shows how important research is in finding new ways to improve medicine and make our lives better.”
