Scientists from The Ohio State University found that a short sleep duration (less than seven hours) is associated with an increased likelihood of metabolic syndrome.
The research is published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society and was conducted by Imran H. Iftikhar et al.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

Aside from a large waist circumference, most of the disorders associated with metabolic syndrome have no symptoms.
Weight loss, exercise, a healthy diet, and smoking cessation can help. Medication may also be prescribed.
In the study, the team conducted a meta-analysis to examine the magnitude of the correlation between different sleep durations and metabolic syndrome.
Data were included from 18 studies involving 75,657 participants.
The researchers found that compared to the reference group with a daily sleep duration of seven to eight hours, the risk of having metabolic syndrome for short sleep duration was higher.
The team says considering the high prevalence of the adult population in the United States who report habitual short sleep duration, the finding supports the idea that increasing sleep hours may prevent the development of the metabolic syndrome.
