
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can gradually damage vision, often without causing noticeable symptoms at first.
The damage affects the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain.
If glaucoma is not detected and treated, the damage can become permanent and may eventually lead to blindness.
Because lost vision usually cannot be restored, regular eye checks are especially important as people get older.
Many forms of glaucoma are linked to increased pressure inside the eye. However, normal-tension glaucoma is different because damage to the optic nerve happens even though eye pressure remains within the range usually considered normal.
Scientists are still trying to understand why this happens. Possible explanations include reduced blood flow to the optic nerve, unusually sensitive nerve cells, or other changes in the nervous system.
Researchers in Taiwan have now found an interesting connection between normal-tension glaucoma and Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia and gradually affects memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to manage everyday life.
The researchers examined health records from more than 15,000 people diagnosed with normal-tension glaucoma. They compared them with about 61,000 people who did not have the eye condition and followed the groups for 12 years.
The research was published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. The results showed that people with normal-tension glaucoma had a significantly greater chance of later being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Overall, their risk was about 52% higher than that of people without normal-tension glaucoma. The association appeared to be particularly strong among older women and people who had previously experienced a stroke.
The researchers also examined whether glaucoma treatment changed the risk. Medicines used to control the eye condition did not appear to reduce the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
That finding does not mean glaucoma medicines are ineffective or unnecessary. These treatments are designed to protect the optic nerve and preserve vision, not to prevent dementia, and patients should continue following the treatment recommended by their eye doctor.
Why might an eye disease be connected to a disease of the brain? One possible explanation is that the retina and optic nerve are actually parts of the nervous system, making the eye closely connected with the brain.
Both glaucoma and Alzheimer’s involve the gradual loss of nerve cells. In glaucoma, nerve damage affects the pathways needed for vision, while in Alzheimer’s, damage occurs in brain areas involved in memory, reasoning, and other important abilities.
Researchers have also studied whether the two diseases share problems involving blood circulation, inflammation, or harmful proteins. Understanding these common biological changes could eventually reveal why some people are more vulnerable to both conditions.
Study leader Yu-Yen Chen said the findings suggest that doctors caring for people with normal-tension glaucoma should be aware of possible signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Earlier recognition of memory or thinking problems could allow patients and families to seek assessment and support sooner.
However, the study does not show that normal-tension glaucoma directly causes Alzheimer’s disease. It was based on health records, so researchers found an association between the conditions rather than proving that one leads to the other.
Many people with normal-tension glaucoma will never develop Alzheimer’s. Other factors, including age, genetics, cardiovascular health, and lifestyle, can also influence a person’s risk of dementia.
Still, the findings add to growing scientific interest in the relationship between eye health and brain health. Because doctors can examine the eye relatively easily, researchers are investigating whether changes in the retina or optic nerve could someday provide useful clues about diseases affecting the brain.
For now, the study offers another reason to take changes in vision, memory, and thinking seriously. Regular eye examinations and appropriate medical care can help detect problems earlier and protect health as people age.
