How Your First Taste of Sugar May Shape Alzheimer’s Risk

Could the amount of sugar a baby is exposed to before birth and during early childhood affect the chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease decades later? A new study suggests the answer may be yes.

The research, published in npj Aging, found that people who experienced sugar restriction during the first 1,000 days after conception were much less likely to develop dementia later in life.

The first 1,000 days, beginning at conception and ending around a child’s second birthday, are considered one of the most important periods for human development. During this time, the brain grows at an extraordinary rate. Nutrition, sleep, health and the mother’s wellbeing all influence how the developing brain is built.

Modern diets contain far more added sugar than diets from previous generations. Sweetened drinks, desserts, breakfast cereals and many packaged foods contribute to high sugar intake, even among young children. Scientists have become increasingly concerned that excessive sugar may affect not only body weight but also long-term brain health.

To study this question, researchers took advantage of an unusual period in British history. During World War II and the years that followed, sugar supplies were limited through government rationing. Families had far less sugar than they do today, and children under two years old did not receive a sugar allowance.

After rationing ended in 1953, average sugar consumption almost doubled. This sudden change allowed researchers to compare people born before and after the policy ended without deliberately changing anyone’s diet.

Using the UK Biobank, the scientists analysed information from more than 60,000 adults born between 1951 and 1956. They grouped participants according to whether sugar rationing covered pregnancy only, pregnancy plus early childhood, or neither period.

Over the following decades, people who experienced sugar restriction during the first 1,000 days had noticeably lower rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. They also had lower rates of anxiety and depression, although no clear association was found with Parkinson’s disease.

The team also examined MRI brain scans from more than 9,000 participants. On average, people exposed to lower sugar early in life appeared to have slightly younger-looking brains and somewhat larger brain areas involved in memory and thinking.

These findings fit with other research suggesting that excess sugar may contribute to inflammation, poor metabolic health and changes in blood vessels, all of which have been linked with brain ageing. Even so, scientists caution that the current study cannot prove sugar alone caused the differences.

Because this research relied on a historical event rather than a controlled clinical trial, other social or environmental factors may have influenced the results. The researchers therefore recommend repeating the work in younger populations where early-life diets can be measured more accurately.

Even without definitive proof, the study supports existing advice that pregnant women and young children should avoid excessive added sugar. Balanced diets rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, healthy fats and protein remain the best-supported approach for healthy brain development.

The study offers a fascinating glimpse into how early nutrition may shape health for the rest of life. It does not show that sugar directly causes Alzheimer’s disease, but it provides strong evidence that limiting added sugar during pregnancy and early childhood deserves further investigation.

If future studies confirm these findings, reducing sugar in early life could become an important strategy for protecting long-term brain health.
