
Good oral health does more than protect teeth and gums. Scientists have discovered that the condition of the mouth is closely linked to many parts of the body, including the heart, digestive system, and immune system.
Growing evidence also suggests that oral health may influence how well some people recover from cancer. A new study from Hiroshima University now adds pancreatic cancer to that list.
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, often called PDAC, is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. It is usually diagnosed at a late stage, and even after surgery many patients experience the disease returning. Researchers are therefore looking beyond the tumor itself to understand what other factors may influence survival. Their findings were published in the Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences.
The research team, led by Associate Professor Kenichiro Uemura, studied 339 people who underwent major pancreatic surgery at Hiroshima University Hospital between 2014 and 2022. Before surgery, every patient received a detailed dental examination. The researchers counted the number of natural teeth and assessed how well the back teeth met together during chewing.
When the scientists followed the patients over time, they found a remarkable difference. People with 21 or more natural teeth survived a median of 60.7 months after surgery, while those with 20 or fewer teeth survived only 39.1 months.
Even after taking into account tumor stage, lymph node spread, nutrition, chemotherapy, and other important medical factors, the difference remained significant.
The findings suggest that the number of natural teeth may provide important information about a patient’s long-term health. Interestingly, chewing ability itself was not independently linked to survival. This means that simply having more teeth may reflect broader aspects of health rather than eating ability alone.
The researchers believe tooth loss may be a sign of lifelong inflammation, poorer nutrition, frailty, smoking, or other lifestyle factors that slowly affect the whole body. Long-term gum disease has also been linked with harmful bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, which previous studies suggest may contribute to pancreatic cancer development and progression.
This study does not prove that losing teeth directly shortens survival after pancreatic cancer surgery. Instead, it shows a strong association between oral health and long-term outcomes. Because the research involved patients from a single Japanese hospital, larger international studies will be needed to confirm whether the same pattern is seen in other populations.
If future studies support these findings, dentists and surgeons may work more closely together before cancer treatment. Assessing oral health could become another way to identify patients who need additional support before and after surgery. Better dental care might also become part of improving overall cancer treatment.
The study highlights how closely connected the mouth and the rest of the body really are. Looking after teeth and gums may provide benefits far beyond preventing cavities, especially as people grow older or face serious illnesses.
The findings are important because they encourage doctors to consider the whole patient instead of focusing only on the cancer. Although more research is needed before oral health becomes part of routine pancreatic cancer care, the study provides strong evidence that oral health may reflect long-term resilience and overall wellbeing.
