
Peanuts are one of the world’s most popular snacks. They are rich in protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and for most healthy people they are considered part of a balanced diet.
However, new research suggests that one natural substance found in peanuts may deserve closer attention for people who have cancer or are recovering from it.
The study was carried out by researchers at the University of Liverpool and published in the journal Carcinogenesis. The scientists investigated a natural peanut protein called Peanut Agglutinin, also known as PNA, to better understand how it may interact with cancer cells after peanuts are eaten.
The researchers explained that a small amount of PNA can enter the bloodstream after people eat peanuts. They wanted to find out whether this protein could influence the way cancer cells move through the body. Their results suggest that PNA may affect blood vessels in ways that could make it easier for cancer cells to spread.
Blood vessels are lined with a thin layer of cells that normally acts as a protective barrier. This lining carefully controls what enters and leaves the bloodstream. According to the researchers, exposure to PNA caused the release of two signaling proteins, called IL-6 and MCP-1, which are involved in inflammation and immune responses.
When levels of these signaling proteins increased, the walls of blood vessels became more welcoming to cancer cells. This made it easier for cancer cells to stick to the vessel walls and move through them into nearby tissues. Scientists believe this process may contribute to metastasis, which is when cancer spreads from its original location to other parts of the body.
The study also built on earlier work from the same research team. Previous research showed that PNA can attach to certain sugar molecules that are found in greater amounts on the surface of many cancer cells than on healthy cells. This causes cancer cells to clump together, helping them survive while traveling through the bloodstream.
When cancer cells form clusters, they may have a better chance of settling in another organ and forming new tumors. This finding suggests one possible biological pathway that could influence how cancer spreads. However, the researchers stress that this is only one possible factor among many that affect cancer progression.
It is important to understand what this study does and does not show. The research does not prove that eating peanuts causes cancer to spread in people. It identifies a possible mechanism that deserves further investigation, and much more research is needed to determine how important this effect may be in real-life patients.
For people without cancer, there is currently no evidence that they should avoid peanuts because of these findings. Peanuts remain a nutritious food that provides valuable nutrients for many people.
However, individuals who have cancer, especially cancers with a high risk of spreading, may wish to discuss their diet with their doctor or an accredited dietitian before making any major dietary changes.
Lead researcher Dr. Lu-Gang Yu and his colleagues say future studies will examine how much PNA actually enters the bloodstream after eating peanuts and whether different amounts have different effects.
Answering these questions will help doctors better understand whether dietary advice should change for cancer patients. Until more evidence is available, the study highlights the importance of continuing research into how everyday foods may influence cancer biology.
