How a common food fat may help cancer spread faster

Scientists have discovered a worrying link between a common fat found in many foods and the spread of cancer. This fat is called palmitic acid, and it is a main part of palm oil.

Palm oil is widely used around the world. It is found in snacks, baked goods, instant noodles, and many processed foods because it is cheap and helps food last longer.

The new study was carried out by researchers at IRB Barcelona and led by Professor Salvador Aznar-Benitah. The findings were published in the journal Nature, one of the world’s most respected science journals. The research shows that palmitic acid may play a strong role in helping certain cancers spread more easily in the body.

Cancer cells exposed to this fat became much more active and more likely to move to other parts of the body.

One surprising finding was that the effect of palmitic acid did not stop even after it was removed. The cancer cells seemed to “remember” their exposure. This happened because of changes in how the cells worked, not changes in their DNA itself. These changes are called epigenetic changes. They can switch genes on or off and change how cells behave.

Because of these changes, the cancer cells became better at surviving in new places in the body. They could grow more easily and form new tumors. This makes the disease more aggressive and harder to treat.

The study also found that palmitic acid helped cancer cells build a kind of network around the tumor. This network allowed the cancer cells to send and receive signals more easily. With better communication, the cells could spread more efficiently.

These findings open the door to new treatments. The research team is now working on ways to block the harmful effects of palmitic acid. They hope to develop new therapies that can stop or slow down cancer spread. Clinical trials are being planned to test these ideas in patients.

Even though the results are important, the scientists say it is too early to give clear advice about diet. It may seem that avoiding palm oil could help, but more studies are needed to confirm this. Cancer is complex, and diet is only one part of the picture.

Still, this research raises important questions about how everyday foods may affect our health. Since palm oil is used in so many products, understanding its effects is very important. In the future, this knowledge may help doctors and patients make better choices about diet and treatment.
