The liver is one of the most important organs in your body. It helps break down food, remove harmful toxins, make bile to digest fat, and keep your blood sugar levels steady.

But when the liver is damaged—from drinking too much alcohol, infections like hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or certain medications—it can cause problems for your overall health.

The good news is that the liver has an amazing ability to heal itself. With healthy habits and the right nutrients, it can recover over time. Research shows that certain vitamins can help protect and repair the liver.

One of the best-known vitamins for liver health is vitamin E. This vitamin is a strong antioxidant. That means it helps protect liver cells from being damaged by harmful molecules in the body.

Studies show that vitamin E supplements can lower inflammation and reduce fat in the liver for people with a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In one study published in the journal Hepatology, people who took vitamin E had better liver function and less damage than those who didn’t.

Vitamin D is another important nutrient. While it’s best known for helping bones, it also supports the liver. People with long-term liver disease often have low levels of vitamin D.

Some research suggests that raising vitamin D levels may reduce liver inflammation and help the immune system work better. You can get more vitamin D by spending time in sunlight, eating foods like fatty fish, or taking supplements.

Vitamin C is also helpful for the liver. It boosts the immune system and helps your body absorb iron. Like vitamin E, it is an antioxidant that protects liver cells from damage. Some studies show that vitamin C, especially when taken with vitamin E, may help people with fatty liver disease.

The B vitamins—like B1 (thiamine), B6, B12, and folate—are important for making energy and repairing cells. People with liver damage, especially from alcohol, often don’t get enough of these vitamins.

Taking B vitamin supplements can support liver recovery. For example, vitamin B12 and folate help make red blood cells and may reduce the risk of scarring in the liver.

There’s also something called N-acetylcysteine, or NAC. It’s not a vitamin but an amino acid that helps the body make glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that helps the liver remove toxins.

Doctors sometimes use NAC to treat people who overdose on acetaminophen (Tylenol). It may also help with other types of liver damage, though more research is still being done.

Vitamins and nutrients can be helpful, but they work best when you also follow a healthy lifestyle. Avoid drinking alcohol, eat a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables, stay at a healthy weight, and exercise regularly. All of these habits support liver health.

Before taking any new supplements, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor—especially if you already have liver disease.

In short, your liver can heal when given the right care. Vitamins like E, D, C, and the B group can help support this process. Along with healthy habits, these nutrients can help keep your liver strong and working well.
