If your kidneys are not working well, these minerals can build up in your body and cause problems like weak bones or abnormal heartbeats. In such cases, plant-based milk or smaller amounts of dairy might be better.
Some healthy foods can also be risky if your kidneys are not healthy. Bananas, oranges, potatoes, and spinach all have high potassium levels. Potassium is important for heart and muscle function, but too much can be dangerous when your kidneys can’t remove it properly.
This can lead to a condition called hyperkalemia, which affects your heart. Choosing low-potassium fruits and vegetables and eating smaller portions can help.
Even artificial sweeteners, which many people use instead of sugar, might not be as safe as they seem. Some studies suggest they could harm kidney function over time, although more research is needed. Using natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup in small amounts might be a better choice.
To keep your kidneys healthy, eat a balanced diet. Try to cut down on salty, sugary, and processed foods. Drink plenty of water and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Choose lean proteins and be careful with foods high in potassium and phosphorus if you have kidney problems.
