New ultrasound procedure may treat high blood pressure effectively

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common health issue that increases the risk of heart disease, kidney damage, and stroke.

Many people are able to manage their blood pressure with healthy habits and medications, but some still struggle with high numbers even after trying different treatments.

For people with hard-to-control blood pressure, a new procedure called ultrasound renal denervation may offer a helpful solution. This treatment is designed to calm overactive nerves in the kidneys that can raise blood pressure. The procedure is minimally invasive, meaning it doesn’t require major surgery.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into the body through a small opening in the wrist or groin. The doctor guides the catheter to the artery that sends blood to the kidneys.

Once it’s in place, the catheter sends out bursts of ultrasound energy to the tissue around the artery. These energy pulses affect the nerves in that area, making them less active and helping lower blood pressure.

A recent clinical study tested this procedure on 224 people who had high blood pressure that was not controlled by medication. The results were promising. The treatment helped lower both the top (systolic) and bottom (diastolic) blood pressure numbers.

It worked both when used alone and when combined with medication. The study confirmed earlier research showing that this treatment could also help people with mild to moderate high blood pressure, as well as those with more stubborn cases.

One of the biggest advantages of renal denervation is that it’s quick, simple, and doesn’t require a hospital stay. The ultrasound method allows doctors to focus only on the nerves they need to target, which lowers the chances of side effects.

Because the treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, it’s convenient and may be more widely available to people who need it.

This option could be a good choice for people who don’t do well with blood pressure medicines or who find that medicines alone don’t work well enough. However, not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. It’s important to talk to a doctor to see if it’s a good fit for your personal health needs.

Doctors and researchers are still studying the long-term safety and effects of renal denervation. More work needs to be done to find out how well it works over many years and whether it could help a wider group of people with high blood pressure.

Hypertension is a serious condition that affects millions of people around the world. This new approach offers hope, especially for those who haven’t been able to control their blood pressure through traditional methods.

As scientists learn more about renal denervation, it could become a key part of future treatment plans for high blood pressure.

The study, led by Michel Azizi, was published in the journal JAMA. Other studies also show that avoiding black licorice and adding healthy nutrients like turmeric and coconut sugar may help support lower blood pressure and better heart health.
