High blood pressure and marijuana: a risky combination

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common health issue. It happens when the blood pushes too hard against the walls of your arteries over time.

A recent study from Georgia State University is raising concerns about marijuana use and its link to death from high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is measured with two numbers, like 120/80 mmHg. The first number is the pressure when your heart beats, and the second is the pressure when your heart rests between beats.

A normal blood pressure is usually around this range. Hypertension is when your blood pressure is often above 130/80 mmHg.

Not taking care of high blood pressure can lead to serious problems like heart disease and stroke.

Many things can cause high blood pressure, like getting older, family history, being overweight, not exercising, eating too much salt, drinking alcohol, smoking, stress, and some health conditions.

The study from Georgia State University looked at how using marijuana might increase the risk of dying from high blood pressure. They included people over 20 years old, and those who had used marijuana at any time were considered marijuana users.

They found that marijuana users had more than three times the risk of dying from high blood pressure compared to those who didn’t use marijuana. The longer someone used marijuana, the higher their risk.

Marijuana can affect your heart and blood vessels. It can make your heart rate and blood pressure go up and make your body need more oxygen. Some people have even had chest pain and heart attacks after using marijuana.

The researchers think the risk of heart problems from marijuana might be even higher than from smoking cigarettes.

This study, led by Barbara A Yankey and published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, shows we need to be more careful and aware of the possible heart risks of using marijuana.

More research is needed, but these findings highlight the importance of talking to doctors about any drug use, especially if you have high blood pressure or other heart risks.
