High blood pressure is a serious health problem that affects millions of people around the world.
It can be difficult to manage, especially when medications don’t work.
But a new study from the University of Maine, along with other research groups, has found that Vitamin B may offer a natural way to help lower blood pressure.
The study found that lowering a substance in the body called homocysteine can make a big difference. Homocysteine is made by our bodies, but too much of it is linked to health problems. People with high levels of homocysteine often lack B vitamins like B6, B12, folate (B9), and riboflavin (B2).
When there isn’t enough of these vitamins, homocysteine levels can rise. This can stop the body from making enough nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax. Without enough nitric oxide, blood vessels tighten, leading to high blood pressure.
One major problem is drug-resistant high blood pressure. This means that even after taking three or more medications, a person’s blood pressure stays high. About 13% of people around the world have this kind of difficult-to-treat hypertension. New guidelines suggest keeping blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg, which makes it even harder to control.
That’s where B vitamins may help. The researchers reviewed different studies and found that taking B vitamins—not just from food, but as supplements—can lower blood pressure by 6 to 13 mmHg. This is a big improvement, especially for people whose medications aren’t working.
However, there’s some disagreement about what counts as a normal level of homocysteine. Many labs today accept up to 11.4 micromoles per liter (μmol/L) as normal, but some experts believe it should be 10 μmol/L or lower. This means lab standards may need to be updated to better reflect what is truly healthy.
Adding B vitamins to treatment plans may offer a low-cost, safe, and helpful way to control blood pressure. Still, it’s important to work with a doctor when trying this method. Taking too much of any vitamin can have side effects, so it should always be done with medical advice.
This new study shows that B vitamins could be a helpful extra tool in fighting high blood pressure, especially for people who haven’t had success with standard drugs.
It’s a simple and natural way that might one day become part of regular treatment for high blood pressure. As always, checking with a healthcare provider is key to using any new treatment safely.
