Chronic kidney disease, or CKD, is a major health problem that affects millions of people around the world.
Despite how common it is, scientists still don’t fully understand how kidney damage continues to get worse over time. But a new study from Boston University may help change that.
Researchers at the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine have discovered a special gene called TMIGD1. This gene seems to play a key role in protecting the kidneys. According to Dr. Vipul Chitalia, one of the lead authors, the new part of this discovery is how TMIGD1 contributes to kidney failure.
Using lab tests and experiments, the researchers showed that when this gene is not working properly, the kidneys are more likely to get damaged. They also found that harmful toxins in the body, which often build up when the kidneys don’t work well, can make the damage even worse by affecting this gene.
This discovery is important because it opens the door to new ways to treat or even prevent chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Wenqing Yin, another key researcher, said that this gene could be used not only to treat CKD but also to help doctors detect it earlier. In the future, medicines might be developed to protect or fix this gene, possibly stopping the disease from getting worse.
The hope is that this new information could help reduce the number of people whose kidney disease becomes so serious that they need dialysis. It might also help doctors catch the disease earlier, when it’s easier to treat.
This exciting breakthrough gives researchers a new path to follow in the search for better CKD treatments. More studies will be needed, but this is a strong step forward.
If you’re interested in keeping your kidneys healthy, other studies have linked certain pesticides to CKD. Some research also shows that a new drug might prevent kidney failure in people with diabetes. There’s also a combination of drugs that may help treat kidney failure, and some vegetables may protect your kidneys from damage.
The full research findings were published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation.
