Scientists find gene mutation linked to kidney cancer

Researchers from the University of Michigan have made an important discovery about kidney cancer.

They studied the genes of kidney patients to learn more about the disease. This research can help doctors treat their patients better.

The Big Study on Kidney Genes

Dr. Rohit Mehra led a team at the University of Michigan. They looked at more than 800 kidney patient tests.

The patients had certain gene changes, specifically in the MiTF family genes called TFE3 and TFEB. They wanted to see if these genes affected the type and seriousness of the kidney tumors.

What Did They Find?

The results showed a pattern. Patients with a change in the TFEB gene were older. This gene change, known as “amplification”, was also linked with a worse outcome for patients.

In fact, this type of tumor was three times more common than another type, called “translocation”.

Dr. Mehra said that these tests, or assays, are the best way to know if a kidney tumor has these MiTF gene changes. He mentioned, “These results help us understand kidney tumors with MiTF gene changes better.”

Why This Matters

Knowing about these gene changes in kidney tumors is very important. Doctors can use this information to decide the best treatment for their patients.

There are three main types of gene changes they found: TFE3 translocation, TFEB translocation, and TFEB amplification.

By understanding these types, doctors and scientists can know more about kidney cancer. This can help them diagnose the disease, predict how it will go for the patient, and choose the best treatment.

In simple words, this research helps doctors treat kidney cancer better. Knowing the gene changes can give clues about the disease.

It’s like solving a puzzle. Every piece of information helps get a clearer picture. And with a clearer picture, doctors can make better decisions for their patients.
