Scientists at Tel Aviv University found a medicine that helps people lose weight, no matter how old they are.
The medicine is called semaglutide.
It was first made to treat a type of diabetes called type 2 diabetes. But, it was found to help with weight loss too.
What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a medicine. It was first made to treat type 2 diabetes. But now, it is also used to help people lose weight.
The Test and Its Results
Researchers wanted to see how well this medicine works in helping people lose weight. They tested people who are overweight but do not have type 2 diabetes. These people were given semaglutide once a week for 68 weeks.
The scientists saw that people lost more weight when they took semaglutide compared to those who didn’t. This happened in all age groups.
Those who are 40 years old and under lost around 15.2% of their weight, those between 40 to 60 years old lost around 14.6kg, and those who are 60 years old and over lost around 14.7kg.
On the other hand, people who did not take semaglutide lost much less weight.
Those who are 40 years old and under lost only around 2.3% of their weight, those between 40 to 60 years old lost only around 2.5kg, and those who are 60 years old and over lost only around 2.4kg.
The Impact on Body Fat and Lean Body Mass
Losing weight is not always good if it means losing lean body mass. Lean body mass is important for physical strength and energy.
But with semaglutide, the researchers found that it mainly reduces body fat and helps keep lean body mass.
However, semaglutide works better for people who are under 50 years old in keeping lean body mass. But it still helped people in all age groups.
The Safety of Semaglutide
Semaglutide is generally safe for everyone. The most common side effect is having problems with the stomach. But this is not serious and can be managed.
Conclusion
Dr. Dror Dicker and his team concluded that semaglutide is a promising medicine for weight loss. It helps reduce body fat and increase lean body mass. Plus, it works for all ages and is generally safe.
This is a huge step towards helping people manage their weight, stay healthy, and live longer lives. With more research, semaglutide could soon be a common treatment for obesity.
