Be aware of ‘sugar-free’ trap for people with diabetes

What Is Sugar-Free?

Sugar-free, according to the FDA, means that one serving of food has less than half a gram of added or naturally occurring sugar.

Naturally, occurring sugar could be something that’s normally in the food. For instance, it could be fructose in fruit or lactose in milk.

Sugar-free is made using Sucralose which is a derivative of Sugar. Sucralose tastes like sugar, but doesn’t contain the same amount of calories.

Thus, it allows you to enjoy the sweet flavor of sugar without having to worry about gaining excess calories.

There are some benefits to eating sugar-free, including maintaining healthy body weight, boosting energy, keeping skin healthy, keeping teeth healthy, etc.

However, recent studies have found that common artificial sweeteners could bring at least 92 side effects, including headaches, anxiety, heart palpitations, depression and neurological disorders.

Although sugar contributes no nutritive value, apart from carbohydrates and calories, it doesn’t mean that people with diabetes should have a sugar-free diet.
