Recent studies have found that a healthy diet can help thwart cancer or reduce the risk of cancer coming back.
Cancer-fighting compounds such as phytochemicals and antioxidants mainly exist in plant-based foods. These foods, not dietary supplements, are the best sources of the compounds.
Experts from Michigan Medicine suggest that people add these foods to their daily diet to prevent cancer:
Food high in phytochemical compounds
Phytochemicals can provide flavor, protection, color, and smell to a plant.
Food high in phytochemicals can stimulate the immune system and fight off cancer by killing or slowing the growth rate of cancerous cells.
The food can also help repair DNA and regulate hormones.
Food that is rich in phytochemicals includes Berries, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Garlic, Onions, Soy (tofu, soy milk), Pomegranates and Tea.
Food high in antioxidants
Antioxidants include some vitamins, nutrients and many phytochemicals.
They can help protect the body from damage by harmful molecules known as “free radicals.”
When found in high amounts, free radicals can contribute to the development of cancer. Antioxidants also help keep the immune system in balance.
Food high in vitamin A includes apricots, broccoli, prunes, squash, and sweet potatoes.
Food high in vitamin C includes berries, citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, and tomatoes.
Food high in vitamin E includes nuts, vegetables, vegetable oil, and whole grains.
Food high in Selenium includes garlic and whole grains.
Scientists suggest that eating a varied diet rich in plant foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and beans, could offer protection from cancer and prevent a recurrence.
