In a new study, researchers found a link between dietary magnesium intake and reduced coronary heart disease in older women.
They also found a link between higher magnesium intake and decreased sudden cardiac death in these women. The study used data from the Women’s Health Initiative.
The research was conducted by a team at Brown University and elsewhere.
The team examined magnesium intake at baseline for more than 153,000 older women and identified the development of fatal coronary heart disease and sudden cardiac death over the subsequent 10.5 years of follow-up.
The data showed that higher magnesium intake was linked to a strong risk reduction in fatal coronary heart disease and a reduction in the risk of sudden cardiac death.
If the findings of this study are confirmed, future research can test whether high-risk women would benefit from magnesium supplementation to reduce their risk of fatal coronary heart disease.
One author of the study is Charles Eaton, MD from Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
The study is published in the Journal of Women’s Health.
