Breakfast is important for a healthy lifestyle. It is not just when to eat it, but also what foods you put into it.
Recently a study reported by the Endocrine Society shows that a breakfast rich in whey protein can help manage type 2 diabetes.
Whey is the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production. Whey protein is the protein isolated from whey.
Currently whey protein is a common diet supplement for people daily use. Usually people use it to help muscle growth during workouts.
The researchers from Tel Aviv University examined whether in overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes, whey protein for breakfast can help lose more weight and reduce more HbA1C than other proteins in breakfast.
The study involved 48 obese and overweight type 2 diabetes patients. These people were 59 years of age on average.
In the next 23 months, the participants ate a large-size breakfast, medium-size lunch and small-size dinner every day.
But their breakfast composition, amount and source of proteins were different. In one group, the breakfast contained mostly whey protein; in another group the breakfast contained other proteins such as eggs and soy. The third group ate breakfast rich in carbs or starch.
Three months later, the researchers found that the whey protein group lost 7.6 kg of body weight. The other-protein group lost less body weight: 6.1 kg. The high-carb group only lost 3.1 kg.
Moreover, people having whey protein in their breakfast had lower glucose spikes after meals compared to other two groups.
Why does this happen?
The researchers explained “The whey protein diet significantly suppresses the hunger hormone ‘ghrelin.’
A whey protein drink is easily prepared and provides the advantages of a high-protein breakfast on weight loss, reduction of hunger, glucose spikes and HbA1c”
In addition, they claimed that “A high-calorie protein breakfast, medium-sized lunch and small dinner is a proven successful strategy for weight loss, improved satiety and reduced glucose spikes throughout the day in people with obesity and Type 2 diabetes”.
So if you like whey protein drinks, that is great. Adding it to your breakfast can you may find you can manage type 2 diabetes better than before.
Whey protein has been used as a popular option for meal replacement and weight loss management. It focuses on building strong muscles and burning body fat.
One thing to remember is that you need regular exercise to maximize the whey protein’s effects.
Recent study shows that whey protein can help regular exercisers gain 6.5 lbs of lean muscles and 14.4 lbs of body fat in just 8 weeks.
Another important thing is that you need to pay attention to the size of your meals. The researchers from the current study suggested big breakfasts, medium lunches and small dinners.
Many people have a large dinner and miss their breakfast. A large dinner can make you overeat easily and disrupt your metabolic system.
To summarize, whey protein is beneficial to people with type 2 diabetes. Adding it to breakfast can help manage the disease
