Why Social Media Is Turning People Against Cholesterol Drugs Statins

Statins are among the most widely used medicines for preventing heart disease, yet they remain controversial in many online communities.

A Stanford Medicine study used artificial intelligence to examine thousands of Reddit discussions and found that negative views about these cholesterol-lowering drugs were far more common than positive ones.

Statins lower LDL cholesterol, often called “bad” cholesterol, by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Decades of research have shown that they can lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, particularly in people who already have cardiovascular disease or face a high risk of developing it.

Despite that evidence, many people worry about taking statins. Stories about muscle pain, other possible side effects, distrust of drug companies and questions about whether cholesterol needs to be treated have spread widely online.

To better understand these attitudes, Stanford Medicine researchers examined more than 10,000 conversations about statins on Reddit. They used AI tools to identify common themes and determine whether posts expressed positive, negative or neutral opinions.

The results showed a striking imbalance. Only about 3% of the discussions were positive about statins, while most were negative or neutral.

This does not necessarily mean that most people who take statins dislike them. People who experience problems or have strong concerns may be more likely to post online than people who take a medicine without difficulty, which can make negative experiences appear more common than they actually are.

The researchers also found repeated examples of misleading or questionable health claims. Some users expressed distrust of pharmaceutical companies, while others questioned whether statins really prevent cardiovascular disease despite extensive evidence supporting their use in appropriate patients.

Another major theme was interest in alternatives to prescription medicine. Diet changes and supplements were frequently discussed as ways to lower cholesterol or avoid statins altogether.

The ketogenic diet was one popular topic. This eating pattern is very low in carbohydrates and high in fat, and while some people lose substantial weight on it, cholesterol responses can vary greatly from person to person.

Some Reddit users reported losing weight while their LDL cholesterol remained high or increased. These experiences sometimes led to broader claims that high LDL cholesterol may not be harmful, even though a large body of medical evidence links elevated LDL with the development of artery disease.

Red yeast rice was another frequently mentioned alternative. It can contain a naturally occurring substance chemically related to lovastatin, but the amount of active ingredient in supplements can vary, making their effects and risks less predictable.

The study highlights a challenge facing doctors in the social media age. Patients no longer receive health information only from medical professionals, hospitals or traditional news sources; they also encounter powerful personal stories and confident medical claims from strangers online.

Personal experiences can be valuable, particularly when they help patients feel less alone or encourage useful questions. But an individual’s experience cannot show how well a treatment works across thousands or millions of people, and popular online claims are not necessarily supported by reliable research.

For people who are worried about statins, the safest approach is to discuss the concerns with a health professional rather than stopping treatment based on social media posts. The benefits and possible risks of a statin depend on factors such as cholesterol levels, age, medical history and overall cardiovascular risk.
