
High blood pressure is one of the most common health problems in adults. It happens when blood pushes against the walls of the arteries with too much force over time.
Because it often causes no obvious symptoms, many people can have high blood pressure without realizing it.
Keeping blood pressure under control matters because long-term high pressure can damage blood vessels and place extra strain on the heart. It can raise the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and other serious problems. Medicine is important for many people, but everyday food choices can also play a major role.
Most people have heard that eating too much salt can raise blood pressure. Another part of the picture receives less attention: potassium. This mineral is found naturally in many everyday foods and helps the body perform several essential jobs.
Potassium helps nerves and muscles work properly and supports a steady heartbeat. It also helps control the balance of fluid inside the body. Importantly, potassium and sodium, one of the main parts of salt, work together in ways that can influence blood pressure.
Eating a lot of sodium can cause the body to hold on to extra water. This increases the amount of fluid moving through the blood vessels and can push blood pressure higher. Potassium helps the kidneys remove more sodium from the body through urine.
Potassium may also help the walls of blood vessels relax. When blood vessels are less tight, blood can move through them more easily and pressure may fall. This is one reason diets rich in potassium-containing foods are often recommended as part of a heart-healthy eating pattern.
Research has repeatedly linked higher potassium intake with lower blood pressure, particularly in people who eat a lot of sodium. Even relatively small improvements in blood pressure can matter when they are maintained for years. Across a large population, lower blood pressure can translate into fewer heart attacks and strokes.
Fortunately, potassium is available in many foods. Bananas are well known for containing it, but they are far from the only source. Potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, beans, lentils, oranges, avocados and other fruits and vegetables can provide useful amounts.
Milk and yogurt also contain potassium, as do fish, nuts and some other foods. Choosing a wide range of minimally processed foods can therefore increase potassium intake while providing fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. At the same time, eating fewer highly processed foods can help reduce sodium intake.
The DASH eating plan is one example of this approach. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension and emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and low-fat dairy products. Research has shown that this eating pattern can help lower blood pressure, especially when sodium intake is also reduced.
However, more potassium is not safe for everyone. Healthy kidneys normally remove extra potassium from the blood, but damaged kidneys may not be able to do this effectively. Potassium can then rise to dangerous levels and interfere with the normal rhythm of the heart.
Some medicines can also cause potassium levels to increase. These include certain drugs used to treat high blood pressure and heart problems. People with kidney disease or those taking medicines that affect potassium should talk with a doctor before using potassium supplements or making major dietary changes.
For most healthy people, getting potassium from food is generally preferable to taking supplements without medical advice. Foods naturally rich in potassium also bring many other health benefits and can replace salty, heavily processed choices. A balanced diet is more useful than focusing on a single nutrient.
Controlling high blood pressure is not simply a matter of removing salt from the table. Eating more fruits, vegetables and other potassium-rich foods, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight and taking prescribed medicines can all work together. Small changes made consistently can provide meaningful protection for the heart and blood vessels over time.
